What I have learnt about blogging #2

So this is my second post which I have written about blogging and what I have learnt so far. I started my blog last Summer and have learnt a lot since then, you can have a look at my previous post, here.

Take every opportunity you can to write
For me I am currently on placement in a school which means I'm in school by half seven and usually leave around six, so long days, and as I have an hour walk and train journey, it means I don't get much time to myself! I've taken to writing blog ideas or actual posts in the notes app on my phone. I literally write all the way on my 45 minute walk, bumping into lampposts as I go, but it works for me and I find makes me walk a lot quicker. I also find that in the morning and outdoors I have a lot of inspiration, so this really works for me.

Schedule, schedule, schedule
I cannot stress how much scheduling posts has saved me. If I was to try and write a post every other day for the next day I simply wouldn't be able to do it at all and would definitely have given up on blogging by now.
I usually have around 10 posts scheduled in advance and so as I post every other day that's around 20 days of the month sorted, which is a great feeling. This works amazingly well for those of you who have great inspiration and ideas one day and nothing the next as days when you're lacking any motivation don't really matter anymore, as you will already have a post sorted! And next time you write a post just add it on to the end of your scheduled posts.

Connect with people
You can write an amazing post with beautiful photographs, but if you aren't networking, commenting and really getting your blog out there, how are people going to find it? I actually really look up to people who have thousands of followers, because it means they have put in so much effort not just writing and taking photos (which can take up so much time!) but spending time finding, reading and commenting on blogs, so much so that now their hard work has paid off and they receive new followers daily. I hope one day I will get to that, but for now it's hard graft that I need to get me there!

What have you learnt about blogging and how long have you been a blogger?

Cerulean

So today I went for a sort of an ocean sea themed eye make up, I mainly used Urban decay's electric palette for this, starting with gonzo on the inner corner of my eye and swept up to the centre of my eyelid. I then used freak, my favourite colour in this palette to blend from the centre of my lid out towards the outer corner, using the double ended urban decay brush to apply and my fingers to blend. For my crease I used the darkest shade in my body shop bluey green set, (which I will be reviewing soon!) I also dabbed a little of this right on the very outer corner. To finish this look I used Topshop's white eyeliner on my waterline and revolt from the electric palette under my bottom eyelashes. I added Rimmel's gel liner in black to line my eyes and Bourjois clubbing mascara for my lashes.

Lip colour is Bourjois rouge edition velvet in Nude-ist.

Spring edit.

I've never really been that into spring. I don't like those inbetweeny stages where you can't quite wear all your dark colours anymore but you also can't wear shorts and a t shirt (not that you can usually in England!) To get myself in the spirit I've created a spring fashion inspiration board and wishlist to get myself out of the rut of Winter clothes.

My spring wardrobe wishlist:

Pastel coloured cardigan/blazer I'm a one for wearing a new pretty bright top and then completely dulling it down by pairing it with a black cardigan. To get my wardrobe in the mood for spring I'll swap my usual black cardigan for a pastel coloured cardigan to really brighten up my outfits.

Floral trousers I've got a lot of patterned leggings, what I don't have is trousers. Leggings just instantly makes me feel like I'm in sunday clothes so getting a sturdy pair of trousers with a bright floral print will be the change I need.

Pointed flats One of my wardrobe staples is black flats and I wear them allll the time. I've always been on the lookout for a mint green or pink pair but have yet to find any, hopefully the start of the warmer weather I'll see some in the shops!

Kimono I have a dark floral kimono, see here but not really a spring/summer look one, so wearing my regular kimono can make my outfit look a lot darker than intended. My switch to spring/summer will definitely be finding a pretty patterned or floral kimono - this could be quite tricky as I'm so picky with florals!

I'm looking forward to getting my white joni's out, too!

What are you adding to your wardrobe for spring?

So I'm pretty much a Victoria's Secret model now || Victoria's Secret's Fabulous perfume

This post has been a long time coming. I got Fabulous by Victoria's Secret for Christmas and it's taken me this long to write about it - it's so difficult to describe a perfume, isn't it?

So doing my research it looks like there is a bit of a discrepancy about whether this is a floral or fruity fragrance. In my opinion it is fruity, with top notes of redcurrant, apricot and mandarin. However there are middle and base notes of violet leaves and pink freesia which is where the floral bit comes in; altogether this creates a real fresh scent.

In terms of longevity it's quite weak and I cannot often smell it on myself; however I have had people comment on my perfume quite far into the day.

This is a real Spring Summer perfume and one that grabs a lot of attention, the amount of people I have had ask about what fragrance I'm wearing is incredible!

I love this perfume and always make sure to wear it on special occasions, it isn't my everyday perfume as it is on the pricey side at 39 pounds for 1.7 fl oz.

Anyway, having a Victoria's Secret perfume basically makes you a VS angel, amiright?
Have you tried this? Let me know what you think and if you agree!

What has made me happy recently

I schedule posts a while in advance so right now it's 26th February, this is what has made me happy recently:

Little notes
So like a complete melon I went back to uni and left my keys back at home, luckily I only had to wait around 10 minutes for my flat mate to get back! When my Mum sent them to me through the post she wrote a little note saying I love you with a drawing of a heart. It's the little things, isn't it?
Applying for jobs - eek!
In order for me to get a teaching job in September I need to be applying now. Scary, right? When I rang up a school which I am applying for to ask for their email address the receptionist sounded really excited when I said I was applying for the job - hopefully a good omen!
A new diary
I've never really thought I needed a diary as I always put things on my phone, but now having a diary and writing down all what needs to be remembered is making me a lot more organised. Now, when I have to write something in there I get all excited, haha!
Wedding planning
Not mine, before you ask. I'm a bridesmaid for a couple that are getting married in May next year. The wedding will be in Cyprus and she's asked me to have a look out on Pinterest, etc for any cute pastel coloured beachy ideas - I am beyond ecstatic.
What has made you happy recently?
Happy Friday!

Disappointing products #2: Garnier softening cleansing lotion

And it's another make up remover one. I definitely just need to stick to my standard face wipes! Here is my previous disappointing products post.

I've recently become very aware of the skin around my eyes and how delicate it is, I shudder to think about how much damage I've already done with pulling my face about like that for years! I thought I'd treat myself to a cleansing lotion which could be used with cotton wool pads to make myself more aware of how my eye area needs a little more TLC.

Where to start. Firstly, it really really stings your eyes. I woke up the next morning with swollen puffy eyes and I wish I was joking; I thought this was strange considering it says it is particularly good at removing waterproof eye make up, so it's specifically designed in mind for use on your eye make up.

This is another thing. Not only did I end up with puffy eyes but also my make up was all over my face in the morning. I thought I'd removed it all, and the next day I really scrubbed. Still the same thing. A make up remover which doesn't do its main job?

It also mentions that it's good for dry skin, which is good as I have combination skin which has been particularly dry recently. So, should be great right? Well it did the opposite. In fact it really made my skin dry.

I honestly wish I could find something good about it to write up but I really am trying here!

Have you tried Garnier's softening cleansing lotion? What did you think?

Topshop + Primark = the perfect couple

I was feeling pretty quirky today and wanted to wear something completely different to my standard placement clothes, as I've mentioned before I write way in advance so this day was a Saturday. I rekindled my love for this gem, a sheer mesh panelled crop top which if you look closely is an Isle of white fest tee. This is by Topshop and was a collaboration with one of the brands they did ages ago and I've never seen anyone else with it. I wear this so much in Summer so the first peep of sun meant I had to put it on.

I also can't wear jeans on placement, so of course the Topshop joni's had to come out. I'm lusting after the new khaki green they have, they'll be mine soon!  (Question: the ripped ones or not?)

I wore this with the only pair of Vans that I don't have holes in at the moment and luckily they went with my jeans too.

To complete this kinda skater look the beanie was pretty much compulsory right? And so warm!

My lip colour is a bargain at £1 from Primark. In Primark in Kingston there are currently two for sale: one a pinky red and this colour: a brownish nude. You have to really work at it to get any colour payoff but for £1 you can't really grumble can you!

Another primark bargain is my new necklace, this was £3 and is actually only one necklace which I love because I'd never be able to pick between them!

What do you think of this look?

Why you need to stop using Tresemme right now.

I was getting really down about my hair recently when I was pre drinking for a night out (because obviously that's what every girl drowns her sorrows about). No matter what expensive treatment or how long I leave mayonnaise in my hair smelling like a sandwich it still seems to be really damaged.

I looked at my hair and noticed that it looked like I had layers in it. Last time I had my hair cut my layers were completely cut out and I was left with one even length, and that's when I realised that my hair must be breaking off at the ends.

I mentioned it to the girls I was about to go out on a night out with and they instantly asked me what shampoo I used. I replied tresemme and they all practically jumped out of their seats.

Basically, tresemme has a large amount of salt in its formula. If you look at the ingredients, the first one is water and the second and various other ingredients include the word sodium in it, which is part of the chemical name for salt (sodium chloride).

Think about what salt does to our body: it makes it dehydrated. That's exactly what you are doing to your hair; drying it out to the point where it becomes so undernourished and brittle that it breaks off. Apparently it is okay to use tresemme for a teenie bit but it is not recommended to use over a long period of time. As someone who has frazzled hair anyway without the added "help" from tresemme, my advice is bin it.

All of my treatments which I have been doing I have basically undone by using tresemme shampoo and conditioner which was designed for "platinum strength" which I have not been getting.
I really wished I knew sooner and so that is why I have written this post on it.

Was I the only one who isn't know about this!?

Fifty shades of pink

Not quite fifty shades, more like three, anyway..
I've been nervous to try out the bright pink of my Urban decay electric palette (see my review, here) as it is just bright, like pretty much neon - but I finally took the plunge!

I lightly swept the colour on with my finger so that I could easily control how much and how bright it was going to be and then really buffed the colour out with my double ended Urban decay brush which came with the palette. I then blended the colour with Virgin from the orginal Urban decay Naked palette which is a shimmery nude beige to make it more subtle.

On my lips I'm wearing Mac Twig, my go to everyday lipstick and Topshop's cream blusher in Pulse. I definitely should have worn this earlier around Valentine's day!

What do you think to pink eyeshadow?
Do you think you'd go brighter?

Monday cheer up: The best test answers ever.

This sort of thing is definitely going to make marking worth it when I (hopefully!) become a teacher. At the moment I'm on placement, I marked a child's book and wrote the question "Do you know where Anne Boleyn was born?" and the child wrote back "Yes I do Miss" hahaha!
Happy Monday everyone!

Velvet bunnie ears

So Summer time we saw tropical style bunnie ear hairbands, and I was so please they brought these into Winter. For Christmas I got two, one a deep green and one in black. They're so adorable and I get so many compliments from them! I also like how the "ears" have wire inside which means that if you don't feel like being a bunnie that day (haha) then you can wrap the two pieces around again to form a normal scrunchie.

I'm loving scrunchies at the moment as they're really soft on my poorly, damaged hair. These two are sadly no longer available, but Topshop have now brought out PU hairbands which I'm desperate to get my hands on!

Are you a lover or a hater of these?

Tattoo tee and tucked up sleeves

I was chucking out a load of clothes recently and found around three or four of these H&M bodycon style skirts. I'm not sure if they still sell them but it was the craze to have one in nearly every colour a few years ago and you could at 3 pound a skirt!

I wore this grey marl skirt with a t shirt which I bought from London tattoo convention last year. These guys are called Allstar tattoos and they're seriously cool, they came all the way from Canada to be there! This tee is fairly long so I've always worn it on a chill day with leggings but I think the skirt smarts it up a bit.

Yes I know I wear these Primark boots too much. I just feel so sassy in them and can't handle life when I'm not wearing them, okay?

I had a seriously good eyebrow day today. On my eyes I'm wearing the two matte shades from Urban Decay's naked palette (review, here): Naked and Buck, gel liner by Rimmel - still going strong! See my post on it here. I'm also wearing Rimmel's Provocalips lip colour in the shade Kiss fatal. I will be writing a review soon, I'm wearing it pretty much every other day!

Just before I left I put on my everyday coat from Republic/Soul cal - this is years old and still my go to Winter coat, and a New look snood which I got for secret santa two years ago and have recently rekindled my love for.

Wearing:
Allstars tattoo tee
H&M skirt
Primark boots
Soulcal/Republic coat
Newlook snood
Rimmel provocalips Kiss fatal
Urban decay naked palette

Let me know what you think!

The under 3 pound secret to hair growth

I cannot believe how simple and inexpensive this is. I'm always researching ways to fix my damaged tresses or to help them grow and often they're so so expensive but this time I've found the one!

Coconut oil contains fatty acids which bind to the protein in your hair, protecting your roots from breakage. It also helps to lock in the moisture which is usually lost from environmental impurities and using heat to style your hair. Massaging the coconut oil into your hair will promote the blood circulation to your scalp and boost nutrient and oxygen delivery which encourages hair growth.

This is Superdrug's own brand of coconut oil and is £2.29 - pretty good right? I've tried to find coconut oil in Boots but it's specifically a body moisturiser and I was a bit nervous to buy it so I stuck to Superdrug's.

When you open it, it is completely solid. Scoop out a heaped teaspoonful and maybe another half if you have a lot of hair and put this into a mug. Boil the kettle and pour the boiling water into a bowl. Place the mug of coconut oil into the bowl. Wait until it's completely melted and take the mug out and leave it to cool for a bit - the oil will be hot! This is more effective than putting it straight into the microwave as it melts more naturally.

Once the oil has cooled down a bit scoop some out and massage into your scalp. This should be done before you wash your hair. Make sure you cover the entirety of your scalp with the oil, there's no need to do the length of your hair. Put a plastic bag or clingfilm over your head when you've finished - something that will keep the heat in. I use a standard carrier bag and then put my towel turban over the top so it looks a bit more normal than walking around with a carrier bag on your head! Leave this on for a minimum of half an hour, I usually leave the oil on for two hours personally but if you don't have the time then half an hour is fine.

Shampoo your hair twice to get the oil out and condition as normal. I wash my hair every other day and make sure I do this before every wash. If you wash your hair every day I would only do this every other.

And that's it! I've been doing this for about six weeks now and my hair growth has been unreal. I usually bleach my roots every six weeks but they definitely need to be done more regularly now as my hair is growing so much more quickly!

Give this a try and let me know what you think!

Advice to give my teenage self

I tried to find the most embarrassing photo of me as a teenager, I hope I didn't disappoint.

We all do stupid things we regret or wear things that when we look back on we absolutely cringe about, here's the advice that I'd give my teenage self.

STOP wearing your hair like that. Seriously, straightening your block fringe but having the rest of your hair curly?

Biology AS level is a bad idea. First exam I was hoping for a B, got a U..

You do not need to wear every bracelet you've ever bought at the same time. Honestly, less is more.

Don't overpluck your eyebrows. I repeat, don't overpluck your eyebrows. Full brows will be in in around five years time, be patient!

It is not necessary to take a photo of every single little thing. You won't enjoy the moment.

Wear clothes you like and are comfortable in yourself in. Don't change how you look or how you dress for anyone.

Do not cut off your hair. Emily, you do not have the right jawline for this.

Have more confidence. If you walk up to that side fringed emo lad that you fancy and say hi but you do it with confidence, you can get away with it.

Remember this is advice that I'd give myself, not necessarily for all teens!
What would you advise your teenage self if you could?
